An honour to acknowledge a great explorer, courtier, poet,
author and historian who was born locally at Hayes Barton in East
At the pinnacle of his fame and power he tried unsuccessfully to buy his
place of birth, Hayes Barton.
Sir Walter Raleigh was a famous Elizabethan soldier, probably the first
Englishman to visualise a great empire beyond the seas.
The city Raleigh in North Carolina has two districts named after him,
Hayes Barton and Budleigh.
He designed a warship, The Ark Ralegh, launched in 1587. It was later
sold to Queen Elizabeth and renamed The Ark Royal.
Extravagant in his dress and conduct, the legend he spread his expensive
cloak over a puddle for Queen Elizabeth, historians believe him capable
of such a gesture.
It was said ‘all his life he retained a strong West Country accent’.
